"Honeysuckle", composed by Jacob Rogers
Conducted by Régulo Stabilito
Program note by the composer:
In late August of this past summer I got to see the band Beach House play at the Royal Oak Music Theater. They are a group whose music I have adored for years, and who have been massively influential on my writing. In the weeks (months) following that concert I was listening to them constantly, and since they were one of the most prominent things in my brain space, I decided it could be productive to engage with their music more specifically. Honeysuckle began as a structural study of specific moments in a number of their songs, trying to figure out for myself how some of their ideas could function in an instrumental context. The title, of course, refers to the flower, an object of intense nostalgia for me. It evokes memories of sweltering summer days, of floating through time before time seemed notable, and of that ecstasy that can only come from giving attention to the smallest moments of life.
